Happy Meals are Glasgow couple Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook, who create blissed out, decaying disco and mainly sing in French.
If it sounds to you like a weirdly archaic combo, then you’d be right. Their retro synth noodles and dusty drum machine loops mine the sonic textures of eighties' TV theme tunes and tinny teenage mixtapes - with compelling results.
Like kindred spirit Palmbomen II, the pair create otherworldly funk and slo-mo cosmic jams that echo the late nights in which they were created.
Although Suzanne and Lewis have worked together under different guises in the past, Happy Meals was born out of sonic experiments at the fabled Green Door Studio, where the pair took a free course to master the basics of analogue production.
The results of their learning is sparkling debut LP Apero, which is out now on Night School Records. Don't miss it!
We first started writing music because…
It felt like the natural thing to do. Over the years we've been together we've performed and written music together and Apéro is the culmination of years of inspiration.
We have been making music since…
We first became a couple - in different forms. It was a couple of summers ago at the Green Door studio in Glasgow that we actually recorded some solid ideas and continued to record the rest of the album in our home studio, Full Ashram.
Our music is…
A hazy mix of disco on a warm day and a tonic wine spike of energy late at night.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
Your heart.
Our favourite venue is…
Intimate and close. Preferably with a glitter ball and a really good smoke machine with fingers behind it that aren't afraid to use it. There's something about being off a stage and almost in the audience. We like to see beautiful faces.
Music is important because…
It is the lifeblood of generations.
Our biggest inspiration is…
Every day we spend together.
Our dream collaboration would be…
On a mountainside, overlooking a valley and the sea. The sun is shining and we are with Terry Riley and Beyoncé.
To try us out, listen to our song…
Music is a journey and as such should be enjoyed fully. Take an hour, pour yourself a drink, and enjoy an album in its entirety. You deserve it.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Rich beyond our wildest dreams.
In 10 years’ time we want to be…
Sipping whisky cocktails on a beach in Italy.
