Psychedelic hip hop outfit Golden Rules are the brainchild of South London producer Paul White and Florida MC Eric Biddines.
Between them, they’ve chalked up a whole heap of musical experience ensuring there’s some serious anticipation awaiting the debut full length release from the pair.
Leftfield beatsmith Paul is Detroit rapper Danny Brown’s most revered producer while he’s ably demonstrated his own musical idiosyncracies across a pair of well received solo albums including debut The Strange Dreams of Paul White and 2014’s Shaker Notes released via R&S. He’s pushing a wobbly, pschydelic hip hop sound which makes his connections with Eric a weirdly perfect match. The Florida-based MC has released four well received solo albums before hooking up with Paul via his mixtape Planetcoffeebean 2.
It led the pair connecting somewhere over the Atlantic and concocting the soulful hip hop jams to be found on their debut album, Golden Ticket, out on Lex Records in August. The release shows off their smudged love for all things electronic and funk, albeit with an abstract wooze all their own making. Meet a pair who are doing their bit to rewrite the beatmaking guide book...
We first started writing music because…
Eric Biddines (EB): It was an outlet to express feelings and ideas we wouldn't normally be cable of in traditional settings.
We have been making music since…
EB: 13 years of age.
Paul White (PW): 13 years of age. And together we've been writing for 2 years.
Our music is…
PW: Who we are. Our insides translated to music.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
PW: the birds (in nature not the band!), and ‘soul’ music of any kind.
Our favourite venue is…
PW: Auntie Pearls Concert Hall, Florida.
Music is important because…
EB: It's a universal language and can bring people together.
Our biggest inspiration is…
EB: Life and everyday surroundings. Something as simple as a rainy day can inspire us.
Our dream collaboration would be…
PW: A song with Sade or Lauren Hill.
To try us out, listen to my song…
EB: The Let Down. The opening lyric and production is just one of the many songs where we collectively fell in perfect sync.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
EB: Playing with baby kittens in Paul's backyard garden.
In 10 years time we want to be...
EB: Known as innovators pushing the boundaries of sound. Without expectations.
Debut LP Golden Ticket is released on 7 August through Lex.
