Their woozy electronics are reminiscent of Flying Lotus or Animal Collective and have already won over super producer Paul Epworth. He loves the band so much he’s signed them to his own Wolf Tone label.
They’ve released a handful of singles to date - Black Mambo/Exxus and the Leaflings EP - both releases show off a love of r&b and a stripped back groove which sets them apart from the usual glut of guitar carrying four pieces.
2014 has already seen the band up the ante. PRS for Music Foundation announced the group as one of the recipients of support from its International Showcase Fund to attend this year’s SXSW. By all accounts the trip was a great success while the latest song to slip from their studio is perhaps their best work yet. Gooey is a reverb heavy loping groove with enough clicks, beeps and electronic blips to keep even Timbaland happy. It’s a hypnotic marriage of songwriting skill and studio tricks and bodes well for their forthcoming debut album ZABA.We spend 30 seconds with the group below…
We first started writing music because…
Dave couldn't sleep, so he decided to do something constructive with his time.
We have been making music since…
We finished university a couple years ago.
Our music is…
Not bacon.
You’ll like our music if you listen to…
It ((loudly) there is lots of bass).
Our favourite venue is…
Berghain in Berlin, the sound system in that place is phenomenal.
Music is important because…
Without it we wouldn't know who Beyoncé is.
Our biggest inspiration is…
Cliff Richard. He still looks fresh.
Our dream collaboration would be…
Flying Lotus probably ... the dude is a genius.
To try us out, listen to our song…
Gooey.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Yikes, Ed would probably be working with trains, Dave would be a doctor of some kind, Drew and I..? Probably shooting the breeze somewhere in Oxford on a park bench.
In 10 years time we want to be...
The same age we are now.
