UK singer songwriter Espa may be trained in jazz but it’s on the more soulful end of hip and r&b that she’s made her name.

Over the course of a handful of killer releases, she’s ensured that her songwriting skills are filed under ‘one to watch’.

Swan Song, saw support at BBC Radio 1Xtra, with over 50 plays to date and a B List addition, as well as Radio 1’s Annie Mac championing the track. The song ably demonstrated her approach to the creative process, enlisting the support of UK heavyweight rapper Giggs and Erick ‘The Architect” Elliott of US hip hop collective Flatbush Zombies.

Latest cut, 141, is even better and follows her first sold out headline show at Hoxton’s Bar and Kitchen. Keep your eyes locked on this blossoming music maker…

I first started writing music because…
I was too dyslexic to write the stories I had in my mind.

I have been making music since…
I was four years old.

My music is…
A patchwork quilt of my weird and wonderful influences, life experiences and my imagination.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
Dr Seuss audio books.

My favourite venue is…
The incredible Wilton’s Music Hall in London.

Music is important because…
It is genderless, ageless, raceless, sexless and brings people together. Giving us permission to step out of our lives, even if it’s just for 3.5mins.

My biggest inspiration is…
My grandfather and his fearless, vibrant life story.

My dream collaboration would be…
Kendrick Lamar and Bjork.

To try me out, listen to my song…
141.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A travelling story-teller… although that’s kind of what I’ll be doing when I go on tour. Whoops!

In 10 years’ time I want to be...
A globally recognised artist who is considered to have enriched the world through her music and live shows. I want to be of service, otherwise there is no point to the whole process.
