Elderbrook is Alexander Kotz, a 20 year old multi-instrumentalist signed to Rudimental’s Black Butter Records.

If the success of his label peers is anything to go by, Alex is in for a great year. The imprint has been a breeding ground for many of the UK’s biggest chart successes of recent times including the likes of Rudimental, Gorgon City and the chart topping Clean Bandit.

Alex’s debut Simmer Down is a great introduction to an electronic sound he started cultivating while a student in Bath. He mixes heartfelt emotion with warm synths to create a striking, yet downtempo bleeps and beats.

Weaned on jazz as a youth, he’s transported his influences to a contemporary sonic setting, remixing the likes of Amber Run, Bipolar Sunshine, London Grammar and more before knuckling down with his own material. Simmer Down is the first fruits of his labour and bodes well for the rest of 2015…

I first started writing music because…
I would always be figuring out new chords and ways to play guitar or piano. Eventually it just made sense that I'd pick a few of those new exciting chords and combine them with lyrics.

I have been making music since…
I was about 15. I started to write the songs for the band I was in at the time. I eventually started to write and perform acoustic music on my own then by the time I went to university I had begun incorporating electronic sounds in the recordings thus leading to Elderbrook.

My music is…
Diverse. I've written songs in so many genres and styles that different aspects have crept into what I'm now making now

You'll like my music if you listen to...
It in the morning.

My favourite venue is…
The Komedia - an ornate, old building in the centre of Bath.

Music is important because...
Everyone needs it. People listen every day for different reasons; from reflection to escapism. But at the same time as being a huge part of culture and humanity, it's so very personal.

My biggest inspirations are...
Jazz, gospel, country and blues.

My dream collaboration would be…
With Anthony B.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Rewinding - one of the first songs I put online.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Film making. I have found great enjoyment in editing films.

In 10 years time I want to be...
Creating.
