Eaves

Only in his early 20s, Leeds-based Eaves is certainly doing much to turn heads and ears with his grungy, folk rock. Picked up by Heavenly Records, he’s toured with Slow Club and released ace debut LP What Green Feels Like…

Only in his early 20s, Leeds-based singer songwriter Eaves aka Joe Lyons has spent the last few months working hard to turn heads and ears with his grungy take on folk rock.

Having released his debut As Old As The Grave EP, to much acclaim in November of last year, Eaves has been out on the road winning over music fans both old and new with a vital update on a classic songwriting sound. It’s Joe’s emotional soul wringing and whisky-soaked arresting voice which captivates, wrapping itself around tunes dabbling in big themes around love and death.

It’s a hazy sound just about captured on What Green Feels Like, an entrancing nine song debut album released earlier this year to no little acclaim. It’s seen Joe been hand-picked to tour with Slow Club and Nick Mulvey before a summer of festivals and headline tour in October. If you’re a fan of the dreamy sounds of Tim Buckley and looking for a new voice to rival his, then Eaves could be a new act for you…

I first started writing music because…
There was not much really to do other than play in a band where I grew up. It was that or fight and hangout at bus stops drinking White Lightning. It was good escapism.

I have been making music since…
I was really young. Had a bit of a hiatus as a teenager, but I used to write on my granddad's electronic keyboard and save songs on floppy disk. I loved the choir sounds and I wanted to be a film composer back then. I started taking it seriously a couple of years ago and now I do it everyday.

My music is…
Grungy folky rocky guitar music.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
Anything I guess, the sound can sometimes split people. There is as much for people to like as there is to dislike. It’s all on the individual.

My favourite venue is…
So far to see a show and to perform in, I'd say Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.

Music is important because…
It keeps you on the level. It speaks of things your friends or family won't talk to you about it, and gives you a release. It can't let you down.

My biggest inspiration is…
All artists who show progression in their art, who keep creating and honing in on who they are and what they do. Tim Buckley, Nina Simone, Nirvana, Radiohead...

My dream collaboration would be…
I'd like to write some music with Marika Hackman. I think she's got something new and interesting going on with her sound, she's another one to stick in the last answer.

Try me out, listen to my song…
Dove In Your Mouth.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Studying something probably, working in a coffee shop, just what I was doing before I guess.

In 10 years time I want to be...
On album 10.
