East London-based 24 year-old Tabitha Benjamin, aka Detour City, is one of the most exciting new names on the electronic circuit.
She started out on her musical journey on the acoustic circuit gigging with the likes of an as-then-undiscovered Ed Sheeran, working on and refining her fledgling songwriting and story-telling technique. It’s a grounding which has bode well for her transition into more dance flavoured rhythms, with ace collaborations with the likes of Digital Soundboy’s Breakage and RAM’s Wilkinson doing much to welcome music lovers to her sound.
In her current guise as Detour City, she’s getting up in the grill of basement clubs across the land with her dancefloor, chart-friendly material, best heard on her new EP Merlin. It's a mixture of classic songwriting with upfront production which is doing it for her. Include a shimmering, must-hear remix for Bastille and it’s unsurprising that the likes of Rinse FM, Mixmag and Radio 1 are all getting their collective knickers in a twist about the Detour City sound…
I first started writing music because…
I had a lot to say.
I have been making music since…
I was three years old. Early recordings were on a My First Sony Tape Recorder.
My music is…
Timeless folk melodies fused with diverse electronica production.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
Massive Attack, Everything but the Girl, Sia.
My favourite venue is…
Corsica Studios. I like that they're independent and dedicated to different sorts of art.
Music is important because…
It makes people feel things.
My biggest inspiration is…
People and the things they do and say.
My dream collaboration would be…
Annie Lennox or Bjork.
To try me out, listen to my song…
Merlin (Everybody Knows) - the single and EP.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A lawyer. I qualified a few years go.
In 10 years time I want to be...
Promoting my third album with a big world tour!
