‘If it didn’t sound like sixties surf or something out of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, it didn’t go in the song,’ says London-based singer songwriter Thom Wicks (aka Dead Seem Old) on his debut single They Won’t Find Us.

The track earned him an auspicious array of admirers including radio DJs Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson, Mark Crowley and Tom Ravenscroft, ultimately leading to the backing of Universal Music Publishing.

In April, he’ll release follow-up single This Mess Won’t Make Itself, a track peppered with modulated beats, Latin-inspired trombones and devilishly catchy melodies.

Thom created Dead Seem Old in 2014 with the aim of exploring a ‘curious blend’ of pop’s various subgenres.

He established a creative partnership with producer – and former Stereophonics drummer – Javier Weyler, who drew on his experience of working alongside masters such as Jim Abbiss, Geoff Emerick and Dave Bascombe.

The results are every bit as curiously catchy as you might expect.

This Mess Won’t Make Itself is released digitally on 7 April.

I first started making music because…
Music always did something to me that I can't explain, and I like what I can't explain. It did what painting couldn't for me in terms of creating.

I have been making music since…
I found a Spanish guitar in my parents’ loft and then spent the entire day locked away in the loft.

My music is…
Mischief. Minimalist mischief.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
Spanish artist Bebe.

My favourite venue is…
93 Feet East, Brick Lane. I feel sexy there.

Music is important because…
It reminds us that we have an imagination and should use it in every possible moment.

My biggest inspiration is…
Sixties Colombian cumbia songs.

My dream collaboration would be…
Nina Simone. I hear she was terrifying.

To try me out, listen to my song…
For now, our debut single They Won't Find Us. But check back in on 7 April!

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Painting. I need an outlet.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Still travelling and writing songs that make people feel good.
