Caustic South London guitar-wielders Dead Pretties riff on the obsolescence of pop culture, drawing inspiration from its gritty underbelly.

Frontman Jacob Slater’s tight-lipped swagger and dandy references pierce a clatter of guitars and drums, bringing to mind Babyshambles, White Stripes and early Stiff Records.

Over the last 12 months, the trio have cut their teeth on whatever stage would have them, finding solace at Brixton venue The Windmill and playing with kindred locals Goat Girl and Shame.

Fresh for 2017, they’re preparing to release their debut single Social Experiment, a mash-up of acerbic social commentary and pogo-ing indie-rock.

We caught up with the lads ahead of its release to find out what makes the band tick…

We first started making music because…
We felt that the barren musical wasteland of pop culture was plastic and needed some real moving parts.

We have been making music since…
Our first gig.

Our music is…
Opinions are divided, come to one of our gigs and decide for yourself.

You’ll like our music if you listen to…
Silent movies.

Our favourite venue is…
The Windmill, Brixton, and the dog that holds dominion over it.

Music is important because….
Some music is important, some isn’t. We hope we fall into the former category.

Our biggest inspiration is…
The world at its worst and the prevailing southwesterly.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Morphine and Tom Waits.

To try us out, listen to our song…
Social Experiment.

If weren’t making music we’d be…
Even more boring.

In 10 years’ time we want to be…
Dead, along with the rest of humanity.

Social Experiment is released on 10 February through Nice Swan Records.

Upcoming live dates:
4 February - Headrow House, Leeds
16 February - The Windmill, Brixton (single release show)
11 March – Manchester, The Castle (Nice Swan Records showcase)
