Palma Voilets, Savages and Chvrches set the tone at the start of the year when they appeared on the BBC Sound of 2013 long list, paving the way for Dark Bells to pick up the indie baton.
In May the trio unleashed Wildflower, their psychedelic ear worm of a debut single, which saw Tenneil, Ash and Simon unashamedly throwing Kevin Shields guitar shapes and layering Lush-like vocals onto four minutes of perfect C86 pop.
Unsurprisingly, a fanfare of praise followed from the likes of The Quietus, The Independent, Line of Best Fit and Crack Magazine.
Dark Bells have since impressed with sold-out lives shows across the capital, appearances at Field Day and Psych Fest, and a run of sought-after support slots for Cloud Control, NZCA/Lines, Savages and Django Django.
Forthcoming single Want has a melancholic pop song at its heart and an epic bass line of Spider Webb proportions. It’s released on 21 October through RIP Records and you can watch it below.
We spoke to Tenneil and Ash to find out more about the band’s beginnings…
We first started writing music because…
Tenneil: We were good friends and wanted to try something new.
We have been making music since…
T: End of 2009.
Our music is…
T: Worth listening to.
Ash: Nice yet powerful.
You'll like us if you listen to...
T: Tame Impala, Warpaint, the Cure, Air, Goat.
A: Music with depth.
Our favourite venue is…
T: Deaf Institute Manchester.
A: The Roundhouse so far.
Music is important because…
T: It changes your mood.
A: Helps you through each day.
Our biggest inspiration is…
T: Each other
A: Sounds and tones.
Our dream collaboration would be…
T: Dark Bells + David Lynch
A: Many, many options!!
To try us out, listen to our song…
T: Want
A: WildflowerRun4DazeWant, it's as long as three songs.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
T: Dead.
A: Producing/recording music.
In 10 years time we want to be...
T: Releasing a greatest hits album... ha!
A: Making/producing/recording music.
