Cymbals

London four piece Cymbals are naming their forthcoming album The Age of Fracture after a book by Princeton academic, Daniel T Rodgers. The notions may be weighty but their music soars beautifully. New single Erosion is a prime example, taking new wave melodies, electronics and the soaring bass of New Order to create a bright and emotive hit in the making. We spend 30 Seconds with one of 2014’s brightest hopes…

The Age of Fracture is a weighty sounding title for an album. But while London-four piece Cymbals have named their forthcoming album after a book by Princeton academic, Daniel T Rodgers, their music is anything but.

Light, resplendent with synths and melody, album teaser Erosion sounds like a blend of New Order and Yuck without a care in the world.

It’s a step up from their previous disco-tinged effort, The Natural World. While the group initially started out as a scrappy, punk funk outfit, their work with producer Dreamtrak (Chad Valleu, Hot Chip) in his Hackney studio has refined some of their edges, without dulling any of their musical power.

This latest effort was again produced in Hackney and given a final mix by Dan Rejmer (Foals, Everything Everything) over. It all bodes well for the band in 2014.

The Age of Fracture is out on 27 January in Europe (4 February in North America) and will see Cymbals launching the album with a headline show on 4 February 2014 at Electrowerkz, London. Get to know them in our 30 Seconds interview below...

We first started writing music because…
It's a great way to spend time together.

We have been making music since…
Jack, Dan and Neil have been playing together about three years. Luke joined the band nearly two years ago.

Our music is…
Necessary.

You'll like us if you listen to...
Pavement, LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys.

Our favourite venue is…
Charleville Castle, the venue for Castlepalooza Festival in Ireland.

Music is important because…
Drink doesn’t always hit the spot.

Our biggest inspiration is…
People with interesting lives who make great music too.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Tim Key.

To try us out, listen to our song…
Erosion.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Doing what we do with the rest of our lives anyway.

In 10 years time we want to be...
Still enjoying writing music.
