Essex five-piece Courts count everyone from Elton John to Beats One’s Julie Adenuga as fans and are set to rip up the festival season with their highly charged hybrid of hip hop and guitars.
Combining fast paced rap with a slick disco funk sound, the group have been blessed from the off with backing from high places. Zane Lowe supported their debut single Part Of with the likes of Huw Stephens and even Sir Elton himself going on to give the band his blessing.
The group’s inspirations stems from a shared passion for disco, hip-hop, indie and beyond. Fusing soundscapes, comforting guitar solos and care-free raps, Courts are working within a hybrid of genres, conjuring up a sound that’s almost hard to define and best heard in their recent single No Lie.
Having recently headlined their biggest gig to date at London’s KOKO, they’re now looking forward to sets at Secret Garden Party as well as a headline gig in Chelmsford… we spend 30 seconds with the band...
We first started writing music because…
We all felt passionate about it from a young age. All any of us have ever wanted to do is make music and be in bands.
We have been making music since…
We were all kids. It started in 2009 when Chris, Dan and Joe first met. Dan's brothers Reece and Luke joined around the start of 2012.
Our music is…
A mix of all the music we've collectively grown up listening to. We've been described as a hybrid band and it's pretty difficult to pigeon hole us into one genre. We've always strived to do our own thing and as a result we've hit on something that we feel is pretty unique.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
Anything with a groove. It's hard for us to compare ourselves to other artists. We've had all sorts of comparisons made though. MTV recently said we sound like early Arctic Monkeys meets The Streets. NME said there’s the musical DNA of the seventies and eighties in there as well. We've had Jamie T, Stone Roses and Mac DeMarco among others. They all sound pretty different to each other though. We're not sure ourselves what we sound like. Really we'd just like people to listen themselves and make up their own minds.
Our favourite venue is…
The Castle Mayne in Basildon. It's a pub we played some of our earliest gigs at so we've got some good memories from those times. A big venue would be somewhere like Brixton Academy probably. Everyone dreams of playing on big stages like that.
Music is important because…
It's what brought the band together. It's something we've always bonded over and has helped us create something we feel proud of and that we want to share with people.
Our biggest inspiration is…
Not wanting to waste our lives working jobs we hate when we’d rather be in the studio making music or being creative in some way.
Our dream collaboration would be…
Nile Rogers probably. Someone who knows how to write tunes that make you feel good.
