Club Kuru is Laurie Erskine, a Bristol-born, London-based producer and songwriter who has been steadily developing a name for himself as a musician drawing the dots between R&B, synth pop and the club.
The lush sounds and an accomplished songwriting skill he showed off on his All The Days debut EP, released last year via Believe Recordings led to taste maker tongues wagging.
He’s spent the intervening time calling on his classical training as a pianist and daubing it in dreamy nocturnal shades - imagine the Drive soundtrack hung around some sticky pop hooks and you’ll be getting close to the source of his sounds.
Club Kuru’s latest work, the Layla EP, is out on 27 November through Believe and is his best work to date, a four track collection showing a burgeoning talent… meet him below…
I first started writing music because…
I was in a band in primary school. I played keyboard and my friend Joe played drums on another keyboard with funny little drum sounds. We actually took it quite seriously for nine year olds. We drafted in some female backing singers. To try and make them like me I started writing songs for them to sing.
I have been making music since…
I’ve been serious about music from my early teens when I started to work hard at becoming a pianist.
My music is…
A work in progress.
You'll like my music if you listen to…
I really don’t know. I’m not sure it always works like that ... but people have likened it to Metronomy, St Vincent and Lana del Rey as well as James Blake. But what do they know? I mean it doesn't sound anything like those guys to me.
My favourite venue is…
There’s this darts room in the back of a pub in Bristol which becomes a jazz club once a week called the Be Bop club. I did my first proper gig there so it’s quite special to me. That said I haven’t been back in years. I like the Lexington on Pentonville Road as a punter, it’s served me well.
Music is important because…
Without it, life would be very sad.
My biggest inspiration is…
Hmm I think possibly Herbie Hancock for being a dude and spanning the genres and coming out with new stuff all the time and just for his mastery of his art. Or Neil Young maybe. I really love his music.
My dream collaboration would be…
I’m not really a team player so maybe no collaborations. Unless it was Herbie Hancock except that he did that terrible album which had Christina Aguilera guest on it. Maybe he’s not my biggest inspiration after all…
To try me out, listen to my song…
Layla - it’s the title track of my second EP which is out 27 November.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Pretty lost as I haven’t really given anything else much thought or time.
In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Alive and well.
