Clean Cut Kid are an infectious indie-disco four-piece who whipped up a whirlwind of good vibes last summer with their debut, self-produced single Vitamin C.
Now signed to Polydor and with a few more belters to their name, the Liverpudlian crew have since supported Shura, Circa Waves and The Courteneers, and this week journeyed to South by South West to show Austin how it’s done.
Not bad for a band who have been together little over a year.
They first formed when Mike Halls and his wife Evelyn cornered old pal Saul Godman and self-confessed music geek Ross Higginson, bouncing their boy/girl vocals off the latter’s rhythmical trickery and washed out pop.
We spent 30 seconds with the gang before they jetted off to Texas for the PRS for Music SXSW showcase to learn more about their fast rise and fresh sounds…
We first started making music because…
Mike and Ev met and found similarities in music tastes, band goals and life in general! They both had their own thing going on musically but decided to join forces. It wasn't long after that they found Saul (literally found him busking on the street) and Ross was the final piece six months later.
We have been making music since…
It’s been the four of us for around a year and a half - we celebrated a year since our first gig about two weeks ago.
Our music is…
Fuzzy and loud. Sentimental and melodical.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
Arcade Fire, Peter Gabriel, Fleetwood Mac, Vampire Weekend...and maybe some early Kings of Leon.
Our favourite venue is…
So hard to pick one favourite! Shepherds Bush Empire is always good though!
Music is important because...
It’s a universal thing that doesn't make people wanna kill each other if they have a difference of opinion. Unlike football, politics, favourite Back to the Future Movie etc.
Our biggest inspiration is...
Saul’s nan. She played chopper bass in her church band and taught Saul all he knows.
Our dream collaboration would be…
St Vincent.
To try us out, listen to our song…
Vitamin C. It was the first song we recorded, first song we released, our mate mixed it and we are undeniably proud of it.
If we weren’t making music we’d be...
Really sad.
In 10 years’ time we want to be...
Still doing this! We'd also love to be releasing other artists on Babe Magnet Records.
