Clarence Clarity

Genuine insanity surrounds the chopped and screwed funk of London producer Clarence Clarity. Check him out at this year’s Great Escape in Brighton…

London producer Clarence Clarity could be accused of being an aural surgeon more than a musician.

His off-kilter songs resemble a day-glo Frankenstein’s monster, strung together from wherever his curious nose and appetite for the sonically weird has taken him. His musical world is one where metal riffs co-exist next to bhangra beats and new jack swing, all stitched together by Clarence’s penchant for lo-fi wobble and fuzzy funk.

Clarence’s 2015 debut album NO NOW, released by Bella Union, is 20 tracks of music demonstrating scant regard for genre. Indeed it’s more a question of what styles aren’t in there, splayed bog eyed all over his complex musical labyrinth. Thankfully, Clarence’s melodies are full of enough hooks to keep his endeavours just about on an even keel. Plus there’s certainly no shortage of ideas in a music which has so far seen him compared to Warp funkster Jamie Lidell and reclusive sonic innovator Jai Paul as well as earn a support slot with XL’s Jungle.

Check out the sound of the real odd future at The Great Escape in Brighton on 14 May… As the man himself says, if you don’t fall under the charms of his music, you may well be more boring than you thought.

I first started writing music because…
Rock and roll is even cooler than smoking.

I have been making music since…
I was about seven years old I guess.

My music is…
Weird if you’re boring.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
Britney Spears as a full grown adult.

My favourite venue is…
Hmm tough one… the Albert Hall in Manchester is stunning. One of my favourite gigs I’ve played recently.

Music is important because…
It’s not important. (Which makes it important you see…)

My biggest inspiration is…
Time.

My dream collaboration would be…
JoJo.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Those Who Can’t, Cheat.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A millionaire by now

In 10 years' time I want to be...
Alive.
