London-based Christian Gregory is, alongside Michael Kiwanuka, one of the founders of Movement Records.

The label continues where the Mercury Prize nominated Michael left off, aiming to showcase artists blending blues, funk and classic songwriting styles. Christian is a case in point, armed with a great voice, winning way with a melody and experimental edge.

Count on You (co-written with his label co-founder) was championed by the likes of XFM and BBC 6 Music while the follow up single Won’t Get Nowhere has a woozy ambience and huge chorus to match Christian’s top voice. Think Prince or D’Angelo and you’re in the right ball park…

Not only that, but the release continues the label’s dedication to recording all of their output direct to tape with no digital editing or plugins to capture an organic live sound. It pays off with this latest single sounding like a sure-fire hit. If Sam Smith is the toast of 2014, then there’s no reason Christian can’t go all the way too. Get to know him in our 30 seconds…

I first started writing music because…
I bought a lot of records growing up so I had a lot of musical influences that inspired me to write. Then at 12 years old I found an Apple Mac at school that had Logic on it and a keyboard/sound module hooked up. No-one else used it so I had free reign to start putting ideas down.

I have been making music since…
I was four years old.

My music is…
A blend of soul and funk.

You'll like my music if you listen to…
Soul records that capture the vibe and feel of a real performance from musicians playing together.

My favourite venue is…
Webster Hall, NYC.

Music is important because…
It can take you somewhere else, it can move you in a way nothing else can.

My biggest inspiration is…
Getting out and experiencing things - I often find inspiration when I travel.

My dream collaboration would be…
Prince.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Count On You.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Making something else that benefits people. I think it’s important to make something that serves a positive purpose.

In 10 years time I want to be…
Moving forward, setting new challenges for myself and continuing to improve musically – no letting up!
