Fans of Hudson Mohawke and Rustie may have a new favourite artist on the block.
London producer Bobby Tank uses their heavy, electrionic sounds as a spring board for this own material, which manages to cram even more ideas and day-glo sonics inside it.
A self-taught producer, drummer, bassist, guitarist, keyboard player and turntablist, he stumbled across a new kind of future-funk after falling into the world of computer music. He combines a love of 80s pop, r&b, dubstep and cosmic boogie into one thrilling, hi-octane sound. His CV so far shows remixes for the likes of AlunaGeorge, DJ Fresh and Niki and the Dove while he’s DJed all over the world, sharing bills with the likes of Annie Mac and Skream. Bobby is now signed to Chase & Status’ MTA Records so with a recent remix for Jessie Ware and a forthcoming collaboration with Giorgio Moroder up his sleeve, 2015 is looking big for him…
2015 is looking big for him…
I first started writing music because…
I wanted to escape social anxiety! Even at an early age, I was always attracted to the idea of how music brings people together and growing up in my crazy household it was the best way to express myself. Everything eventually made sense.
I have been making music since…
I picked up my first instrument at age seven and have progressed from there really. Experimenting in various bands, playing an array of instruments and understanding composition helped me cope with foundations of what I’m making today. It wasn’t until late 2010 I actually started making music on my own under the alias Bobby Tank. Still learning…
My music is…
Hahaha well now, let’s see ... I get asked this a lot and I’m not quite sure how best to describe it, hell I don’t even know myself what exactly it is I’m making. On the spot … I’d say hypermelodica electronica (I just made that up just now btw).
You'll like my music if you listen to…
Slugabed, Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Sebastian, Two Inch Punch, Kastle, XXYYXX.
My favourite venue is…
Too many to name individually but the last venue I had a really good time in was Club Asia in Tokyo.
Music is important because…
As I mentioned earlier, other than food, it brings everyone together regardless.
My biggest inspiration is…
I’m sure this applies to millions but MJ hands down alongside many hip hip producers like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Madlib, Hi Tek, Timbaland ... list goes on and on. Pretty much every artist I listen to and enjoy inspires me in some way.
My dream collaboration would be…
I really want to work with Chase and Status, Little Dragon, Zeds Dead.
To try me out, listen to my song…
Afterburn, Learn From You, Undone, The Way.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
I was working in accounting before I pulled my finger out so would probably be finance related buuuuut I really really hope this music thing works out.
