Bernard+Edith

If the Knife were from Whalley Range in Manchester rather than Sweden, then they may well sound like experimental synth pop duo Bernard+Edith. This musical pairing dream up unnerving, electronic sketches which wouldn’t be out of place adorning a Bela Lugosi horror. Look out for their forthcoming Poppy EP. You can also catch them at Soup Kitchen in Manchester at the SWAYS Records showcase as part of Independent Venue Week on 2 February.

This experimental girl/boy duo, made up of Greta Edith and former Egyptian Hip Hop synth addict Nick Delap, dream up distinctive, unnerving musical sketches. Full of echo, pitch distortion and a musical edge which would suit a horror movie, their songs wriggle around under the skin, somewhere between the catchy and the creepy.

Despite only forming in 2012, the duo have already made an impact on the Manchester music scene, standing out like a sore thumb with their trippy take on weird pop. Alongside label mates on Salford label SWAYS Records, they’re adding large dollops of oddness to Manchester’s music circuit.

Look out for their forthcoming release – Poppy EP - on SWAYS Records and their appearance at the label showcase at the Soup Kitchen in Manchester on 2 February as part of Independent Venue Week (IVW)…

We first started writing music because…
We first started writing music because we had a lot of creative energy. We needed to channel it into something that we could completely control and steer towards whatever direction we wanted to.

We have been making music since…
We have been making music together as Bernard+Edith since 2012.

Our music is…
Dark, dreamy oriental pop with a layer of hot classic opera and spiced percussion.

You'll like our music if you listen to...
You'll like our music if you listen with your heart and occasionally over eat.

Our favourite venue is…
The Bombed out Church in central Liverpool.

Music is important because…
It's one of the only things that bridges together nations, cultures, ages and religions.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Twin Peaks.

Our dream collaboration would be…
The best collaboration would be Fever Ray meets Cocteau Twins.

To try us out, listen to my song…
Poppy. It’s being released through SWAYS at the end of February. Keep an eye on our pages.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
We’d either be spending more of our time curating music art events and exhibitions or walking dogs in the park. Greta also runs West Wolf; a project that mixes art, music, fashion and events.

In 10 years time we want to be...
Relaxing on a beach in China, having just played a show to 10,000 adoring fans.
