Ben Montague is an impassioned songwriter, crowd-pleasing touring artist, eternal optimist and custom guitar business co-owner.
Over the past three years he’s been building quite a rep for lyrically raw and melodically anthemic pop tunes, with tour dates across the UK and beyond and support from BBC Radio 2.
His third album Back Into Paradise is issued through Ben’s own MWM label on 15 June.
We spent 30 seconds with Ben to learn more about his passion for songwriting and his key influences…
I have been making music since…
I was about 14 years old, writing and singing in bands since I was at school. My first ever gig was at the local school band competition at 16, in which I think we came second. My first breakthrough on the UK music scene was in 2010 with a Record of the Week spot on BBC Radio 2 with a song I co-wrote with my friend Jamie Hartman.
My music is…
A combination of rock/pop with a soulful rootsy twist. Artists like Ryan Adams, John Mayor and Paolo Nutini definitely inspired this album.
You'll like me if you listen to…
Ryan Adams.
My favourite venue is…
The Sage in Gateshead. I got to support Amy Macdonald there in 2013. It was one of the best nights of my life, incredible sound and the venue just blew my mind!
Music is important because…
It takes people out of the stresses and strains of day to day life. It brings people together whether at a party or a couple just having a night in listening to a record on a Friday night.
My biggest inspiration is…
Paul McCartney.
My dream collaboration would be…
Kelly Jones from the Stereophonics or Adele for a duet.
To try me out, listen to my song…
Back Into Paradise from my forthcoming album Back Into Paradise. It was the song that defined the direction for the new album, the song is about falling down, picking yourself up and never losing faith no matter what is thrown at you!
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Selling guitars. Oh wait I do that too at my guitar company The North American Guitar.
In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Touring sold out venues all over the UK and Europe. And have at least two top 10 albums!
