Anushka

If your music receives a thumbs up from Giles Peterson’s ears, then you’re probably doing something right - and so it is with Anushka. Max Wheeler and Victoria Port are the Brighton duo who blend weighty UK bass and soulful house all topped off by Victoria’s honey vocals. Their debut Yes Guess EP has captured the sound of the summer with its breezy take on classic British dance. Imagine SBTRKT going out on the town with Jill Scott and you’re getting close…

Giles Peterson has a reputation as one of the most esteemed and knowledgeable of British DJs.

So if he and his Brownswood label are backing you, you’re probably on to a good thing.

So it is with Anushka. Max Wheeler and Victoria Port are the Brighton-based duo doing their best to mix up contemporary UK funky-esque beats with some serious bass weight.

It’s club music you can sing along to and they do it so well that Giles has been championing the pair on his 6 Music show while also deciding to release their music via Brownswood.

Victoria’s gorgeous vocals are sweet and light and do much to conjure up echoes of Jill Scott and Erykah Badu sparring it out over a mike while Max’s beats pack a serious punch reminiscent of Disclosure or Jacques Greene.

The Yes Guess EP emerged on Brownswood during the spring showing off this sound - and their energy and summery heat has already endeared them to many.

I Have Love 4 You is a particular highlight from the release which perfectly captures the potential of their electronics. This is classic UK dance music.

The pair's next single is the double A side: Atom Bombs/The Constant and is due out mid September. We spent 30 Seconds with Max (M) and Victoria (V) to find out how they want to be going intergalactic in 10 years time…

We first started writing music because...
M: I think we first started writing music together because we wanted to make the type of tunes we wanted to hear on a night out. It's kinda evolved since then though. I think we both believed music could have strong songwriting but still sound good on a system.

We have been making music since...
V: Max and I started working together in the autumn of 2011 but independently I think music has always been a big part of our lives.

Our music is…
M: Forward thinking.

You’ll like our music if you listen to…
M: Dauwd, Julio Bashmore, Lianne le Havas, SBTRKT, Jill Scott - pretty wildly varied.

Our favourite venue is...
M: Good question - playing on top of a mountain at WorldWide festival in Leysin was pretty epic.

Music is important because...
V: It has so much power. It's universal.

Our biggest inspiration is...
V: Erykah Badu.
M: Everyone in the crew around us, so many talented people. Guess Joy Orbison is definitely one.

Our dream collaboration would be...
M: Quincy Jones.

To try us out, listen to our song...
M: I Have Love 4 You from the Yes Guess EP.

If we weren't making music we'd be...
V: Teaching music.

In 10 years time we want to be...
M: On the moon.
