MOBO Award nominee Annastasia Baker is a genuine new UK soul talent, whose songs come from the heart and are delivered with true conviction.

Over the last three years she’s been quietly incubating her sound, pulling in influences from the full gospel, R&B, reggae and jazz spectrum.

The results of all this experimentation are audible on her debut album You Turn, which was released on 1 June through Black Grape Records.

We spend 30 seconds with the fast-emerging talent to learn more…

I have been making music since…
I was very young. Even as a small child if I would hear noises from the washing machine, I'd make up a song. As I got older, around 16 years old, I took it more seriously by going to Vocaltech music school, then went on the X Factor. The music for my album You Turn is the most personal and heartfelt music that I have ever written.

My music is…
From the heart!

You'll like me if you listen to…
Adele, Amy Winehouse, Chaka Khan, Fantasia and Emeli Sande.

My favourite venue is…
The O2 Arena here in London. I haven't performed there yet but I will one day. It's an iconic venue and my local music venue. I have great memories from when I won the TV show Time2Shine at The indigO2, as well as sung there during the bootcamp episode of the X Factor, so the dream is to headline there one day.

Music is important because…
It creates lasting memories and it touches people. Bob Marley sums it up “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain”. I want my music to do just that!

My biggest inspiration is…
My daughter. She is young and very strong, she blows me away on a daily basis. She has Type 2 diabetes and it just amazes me when kids fall and they get right back up to keep playing or fighting on. She makes me want to keep going, teaches me a lot every single day.

My dream collaboration would be…
Fantasia Barrino!!! I love her sincerity on stage. Next on my list would be Sting. I would literally cry! His song writing, tone of his voice, musicianship, everything!

To try me out, listen to my song…
Pass It On, it's a feel good song that everyone can't help but move to.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Jumping over hurdles as I used to be an athlete. I used to run for Cambridge Harriers and was Bexley Champion for Sprint Hurdles for three years in a row. I am very competitive so by now, I would have probably been running for Great Britain.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
A Grammy Award winning artist with international acclaim. Equally importantly, I would love to take my music to the world.
