Red Bull Music Academy alumni Andrea Balency calls on a patchwork quilt of influences to make her music.

Part-Mexican, part-French, Andrea was first tipped back in 2010 as a musical talent to watch out for before she joined the academy.

Support slots with the likes of James Blake, Mount Kimbie and opening a gig in Mexico for the Cure in front of 50,000 people have all followed for this talented electronic chanteuse. Both James and Mount Kimbie as well as the Cocteau Twins and Fever Ray act as pointers to her dreamy, ethereal sound, which twists electronica and R&B into futuristic new shapes.

Her upcoming EP (Walls, out now) was co-produced by long time James Blake collaborator Airhead and is the best introduction to her cutting edge sounds…

I first started writing music because…
I never thought about it too much. It just felt like something I had to do at the time.

I have been making music since…
I was five years old. I took piano lessons and played classical music until I started writing a few years ago.

My music is…
A mix of many influences; things I see, things I read, things I hear. The way I feel during the creative process.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
Any kind of modern pop probably, but I'd rather not narrow it too much... anyone could like anything after all!

My favourite venue is…
Ex Teresa Arte Actual in Mexico City.

Music is important because…
Having an insight into someone else's individuality and translating it with your own sensibility is beautiful and enlightening.

My biggest inspiration is…
Contemporary dance at the moment. But I find inspiration in visual arts and literature as well.

My dream collaboration would be…
Someone whom I trust completely with my music, which is hard to find... I'm proud to say I'm working with that person right now.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Crystals, or my cover of Little Dragon's track Paris.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A dancer or an illustrator.

In 10 years time I want to be...
Doing the same thing I'm doing today, making music in a place I love.
