Like The Shangri-Las crossed with Mazzy Star, Amy Studt’s mix of dusty shoegaze, sixties guitars and subdued girl group vocals will have you spinning back to a bygone era in a flash.

Liberal splashes of Joe Meek guitar effects are offset by Amy’s bare vocals and lyrical honesty, while restrained pop choruses recall the dizzy heights of Motown and the pin prick of teenage heartbreak.

No stranger to the murky world of pop, Amy was discovered as a teenager by svengali Simon Fuller before signing to Polydor and releasing a sprinkling of top 20 singles and a debut album, False Smiles (2003), which sold more than 250,000 copies.

Retreating from the limelight, Amy began pushing the limits of her sound to formulate something new. She spent the last year in her own Sleepwalker Studio with Hatcham Social’s Toby Kidd working on new material, with the first glimpse being the retro gem I Was Jesus in Your Veins.

We spent 30 seconds with Amy to find out more about her evolution from teen popstar to experimental singer songwriter….

I first started writing music because…
I wanted to explore human emotion in music.

I have been making music since…
I was 8. I would spend all my time sat at the piano writing songs and avoiding the 'real world' and living in my own creations.

My music is…
Heartfelt, painful, violent, beautiful, vulnerable and surprising.

You'll like me if you listen to...
The Shangri-las, Mazzy Star, Cat Power, Stina Nordenstam.

My favourite venue is…
So far, Zigfrid von Underbelly. But then I would say that cos the owner is a friend. Good sound and nice atmosphere for a stripped down set.

Music is important because…
It is everything. I have nothing to say to people who don't like music. They are aliens with no heart or imagination that mean to destroy the earth.

My biggest inspiration is…
My life.

My dream collaboration would be….
Hope Sandoval.

To try me out, listen to my song…
I Was Jesus in Your Veins.

If I wasn't making music I'd be…
A shell.

In 10 years’ time I want to be...
On my fifth album, living in a warehouse in Brooklyn, filling out venues, madly in love, riding around New York on the back of someone's vintage moped.
