Ambassadeurs

If the eclectric electronics of Hudson Mohawke and Machinedrum do it for you, then you need to know the glacial synth work outs of Ambassadeurs. This Brighton-born producer sounds like he’s travelled to the future, got wind of the most exciting noises and used them as fuel for his own digital music. A love of house, footwork and ambient noises adorn the wonderful sounds beaming out of his Trouble and Alone in the Light EPs...

If you want to know what the future might sound like, then you should speak to Ambassadeurs (aka Mark Dobson).

This electronic experimenter is using his machines to take the listener musically time travelling. Weaned on the early output of Ninja Tune, that bastion of all things musically innovative and exciting, he began creating beats on an old Amiga as a youth before progressing to fruity loops and fleshing out his musical ideas into bigger, more ambitious sounds.

Now signed to Pilot Records, his recent Trouble EP sizzled with electronic exuberance and showed off a talent in love with all forms of dance from instrumental hip hop to Chicago footwork. The follow up Alone in the Light points to a future as bright as his music and with an album set to drop, anything could happen next for this musical auteur. M spent 30 Seconds with Ambassadeurs to find out what gets his musical juices flowing…

I first started writing music because…
I started to write music because I’m obsessed with creating things. There's some sort of satisfaction that cannot be obtained anywhere else from making something and realizing a vision while expressing yourself. More specifically I got into music because I always found the experience of listening to a good track unlike any other.

I have been making music since…
I’ve been making music since I was young. My first experience of making electronic music was when I was in middle school (About 11/12 years old) and me and my dad would try and make music on this old Amiga computer we had using this software called Octamed. My dad also played guitar so we had this acoustic in the house that I used to try to play. That’s when it all began really.

I then got into bands in high school, I played electric guitar and we would cover bands like Rage Against The Machine, Led Zeppelin and The Smashing Pumpkins so I did that for a while. Whilst in high school I discovered electronic music through buying this Ninja Tune compilation record, It changed everything for me because it opened up this whole world of music I never even knew existed. It was my gateway to this new sound. It was then I got hold of some production software (Fruity Loops) and started producing.

My music is…
Electronic. No specific sub genre but it tries to combine everything I like from all the different music I listen to. I don’t really stick to one sound for all my tracks so it’s kind of hard to explain but it takes influences from hip-hop, footwork, house, dubstep (the original sound, none of this new EDM stuff) trap and ambient.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
Anything I guess… not saying you will definitely like it but give it a try.

My favorite venue is…
My favorite venue is probably the Concorde 2 in Brighton simply because I would go there to see bands regularly as a kid. I’ve seen lots of my favorite musicians there and it feels kind of special because of that.

Music is important because…
It has this magical power to change how you feel in an instant and can put across complex emotions that cannot be expressed through any other medium.

My biggest inspiration is…
All aspects of life can be an inspiration. It’s usually during the times that are at the extremes at either end of the scale that are most inspirational. They give you something to work with and draw more inspiration from.

My dream collaboration would be…
I would love to get in the studio with some proper foley recordist/artists. That would be amazing. I would love to work with Amon Tobin as he does a lot of this. I would like to work with some film composers… someone like Bernard Hermann just because of the weird harmonies he uses that are always so dark and haunting.

To try me out, listen to my song…
I’d have to say M.O.P.E as that’s the one everyone refers to but also check out my remix of Young Wonder’s track To You and Ignite. Those should give a good representation of the sounds I make.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Designing and building audio equipment. I studied audio electronics at university and would love to get properly into that.

In 10 years time I want to be...
Happy that I’ve done as much as I could have in the 10 years before and still be making music of course.
