Since stepping into the spotlight earlier in 2016, this year has turned out to be a big one for ALYUSHA.
Following her UK and Europe tour with Submotion Orchestra she released her second single Paradise with Linden Jay, performed at Afropunk with ‘ghetto-futuristic’ artist Gaika and is now taking back the centre stage with Moshi Moshi.
Mixed by Grammy nominee Alex Evans, ALYUSHA’s latest song is a hybrid of futuristic-trap, a perfect synthesis of her Japanese roots combined with the industrial sounding landscapes of her city of London. She inhabits a similar musical space to the likes of Massive Attack and Bjork and is destined to take over in the new year. We spend 30 seconds with her to find out more…
I first started writing music because…
It’s always been a cathartic way of digesting life for me. I was a pretty intense kid spending hours locked up in the basement writing.
I have been making music since…
I was about seven. A few years in, I was adding sevenths and ninths and fell in love with crunchy harmony. Now I like to juxtapose completely sparse arrangements with beautiful chords.
My music is…
Dramatic.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
Dark, twisted, experimental alternative pop.
My favourite venue is…
Brixton Academy. My favourite venue I've performed in was Brixton Electric when touring with Submotion Orchestra. The lights and sound system were insane.
Music is important because…
It has the power to transcend language, social and geographical barriers.
My biggest inspiration is…
And always has been the landscape around me. My production sounds pretty industrial, which I guess is bound to happen if you're living in a city like London.
My dream collaboration would be…
The Weeknd or Amon Tobin!
To try me out, listen to my song…
Moshi Moshi.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Doing something in the field of archeo-acoustics. Such a fascinating subject!
In 10 years’ time I want to be...
Running my own studio and label full time.
