Hackney-based singer-songwriter Albert Gold crafts music heavy on emotion, and rhythm, doffing his cap in the direction of Frank Ocean and British R&B star Shakka.

An alumni of the British Academy Of New Music in downtown Stratford, Albert Gold recently entered Kensaltown Studios with the legendary Sacha Skarbek (who’s previously worked with the likes of Adele and Lana Del Rey) for a series of intense songwriting sessions. It was here that the broody, gospel-tinged soul of Don’t Let Me Go was born.

Albert has since played showcases for The Fix, Tipping Point, BBC Introducing, Sofar Sounds and Blackjack London in various parts of London and is set to be a fixture on the cooler end of this year’s festival circuit. We delve deep with this new songwriting star…

I first started writing music because…
I wanted a fun way of writing my diary as a child, to talk about everything. I found music and writing were the only ways in which I could get my feelings out the right way.

I have been making music since…
I was about 13 or 14 years old.

My music is…
A blend of everything I grew up on like soul/pop/alternative … I think it’s like my diary for the things I’ve been through throughout the 25 years of my life.

You'll like my music if you listen to…
Luther Vandross, Seal and Gnarls Barkley.

My favourite venue is…
Birthdays in Dalston - I’ve always had a lot of fun in that venue, performing there makes me feel at home.

Music is important because…
It has always been a way of me saying exactly how I feel without any excuses. Music allows me to be free…plus it puts my mental brain at ease haha.

My biggest inspiration is…
Luther Vandross is the reason I make music: his voice, his songwriting and the class he had was timeless. I don’t think another artist has touched him in anyway or ever will.

My dream collaboration would be…
Between Luther Vandross and Prince.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Don’t Let Me Go.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Most probably homeless.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
On a world tour singing from about five or or six albums’ worth of material, travelling around seeing things I’ve never been able to see so far in my life.
