Ali and Billy Strange are cousins from Glasgow’s East End who create thrillingly lo-fi indie that sounds like Lone Pigeon doing Merseybeat.

Despite their moniker, there’s little pretence in Acting Strange's music. Raw guitar riffs and ambient room sounds combine to form a sturdy bedrock for the pair’s humble lyrics and honest melodies.

With a strong pop pull that pushes against the sonic deviance of Velvet Underground or Beta Band, Ali and Billy have hit on a warm, fuzzy formula that’s brimming with unaffected optimism.

They began making music together as teenagers, in the back of their uncle’s taxidermy shop in Oban. During the summer holidays, he would teach them to play guitar and an assortment of other instruments he had lying around.

When their uncle sadly passed away earlier this year, the pair decamped to his old shop before it was pulled down to record their debut EP Night on the Tiles.

With the release due on 8 September, and a support slot with Ezra Furman under their belts, we spend 30 seconds with a jingle-jangle pair who are clearly on the up…

We first started writing music because…
We're both terrible at football. Nah, like anybody, it was to be like our heroes and make a racket with our friends.

We have been making music since…
We were about 15, we bought the really cheap three-quarter size acoustic guitars that they make you play in school. The ones in the Argos catalogue. I've still got mine.

Our music is…
Metronome free.

You'll like our music if you listen to…
Gold FM.

Our favourite venue is…
The Barrowlands, Glasgow.

Music is important because…
We live in a secular society and music gives you something worthwhile to follow. John Cooper Clarke said, ‘Rock ‘n’ roll is the folk music of capitalism’. Might be something in that…

Our biggest inspiration is…
We have many. It changes from Jim Carey to The Beatles, depending on our mood.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Kanye West. Even though he doesn't return our calls we consider him the third member of Acting Strange.

To try us out, listen to our song…
Rumble. It's our favourite just now.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Cleaning up the streets as an odd couple detective duo, ‘You're a loose cannon’ etc.

In 10 years’ time we want to be…
We want to have left some good stuff behind.
