A Dead Forest Index

This androgynous pair certainly have friends in cool places: they've just become the latest signing to Jehnny Beth's (Savages) hip label Pop Noire and have an ace new EP on the way...

Androgynous duo A Dead Forest Index have spent the last five years travelling from New Zealand to London – via Romania – seeking out the most mournful music each resting place has to offer.

They have blended these influences with a sombre minimalism that makes their songs pull on your heart as they hang heavy in the air.

From genderless vocals to percussive restraint, less is definitely more for A Dead Forest Index.

Native Newzealanders Adam and Sam Sherry first developed a passion for the sound of Romanian gypsy troupe Taraf De Haidouks a few years back and, after the death of violinist and leader Nicolai Nescu, Adam travelled across Europe to follow them.

The experience prompted the brothers to start a band themselves, and has sculpted their sound ever since.

Early EPs, including stand-out Antique, marry the energy of The Breeders with the posture of Savages and the unpredictability of Zach Condon’s gypsy folk band Beirut.

After a series of shows supporting Savages in the UK, Europe and Australia, Jehnny Beth (lead singer of Savages) and producer Johnny Hostile signed the band to their hip Pop Noire label.

The EP Cast Of Lines will mark their third official release and is expected on 2 June.

We caught up with the pair to find out more about their music and influences...

We first started writing music because…
Music has always been the earliest memory.

We have been making music since…
Together as a duo for four years.

Our music is…
Wave-like, we hope.

You'll like us if you listen to...
Seth Frightening.

Our favourite venue is…
The Wine Cellar in Auckland, New Zealand.

Music is important because…
It can translate something unknowable.

Our biggest inspiration is…
The people and influences around us.

Our dream collaboration would be…
We're huge fans of A Silver Mount Zion.

To try us out, listen to our song…
Cast of Lines.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
We'd get involved in theatre back-drops, painting, or long distance running...

In 10 years time we want to be...
Travelling, grounded, travelling.

A Dead Forest Index will be playing at their Cast of Lines EP launch party on 5 June at The Waiting Roo, Stoke Newington, London, with Jehnny Beth DJing. More info available at - https://www.facebook.com/events/254144334769794/?ref_newsfeed_story_type=regular
