PRS for Music signs five-year licence agreement with BBC

The new agreement further cements the important partnership between PRS for Music and the UK’s largest public service broadcaster.

PRS for Music has today announced a new five-year music licence agreement with the BBC. Offering the broadest range of music rights possible, the new licence covers the BBC’s full suite of services including, television, radio, iPlayer, and Sounds in the UK, as well as BBC World Service and BBC Studios internationally, further cementing the important partnership between PRS for Music and the UK’s largest public service broadcaster.

During its 100-year history, the BBC’s partnership with PRS and its music creator and publisher members has had a powerful impact, together helping to boost the UK music industry on a global scale. In 2020, PRS for Music processed over 100 billion lines of music data from across the BBC’s platforms, reflecting the role of the BBC as a leading champion of UK music, and the importance of music across its services.

The new licence agreement will give the BBC the freedom and flexibility to develop and grow its digital content platforms, through continued access to exceptional world-class music, whilst also delivering long-term certainty to music publishers and creators.

In a year that saw significant disruption for the creative sector at large, more than eight million minutes of music still featured on BBC TV programming alone in 2020; from series like The Rap Game which helps to break new artists, to longstanding iconic music shows like Later… with Jools Holland, and award-winning composer and PRS member Carly Paradis’ rousing score for acclaimed TV drama, Line of Duty.

With a PRS for Music licence, the BBC has access to over 30 million musical works to use across its platforms. Over 40,000 songwriters and composers received royalties for music used by the BBC in 2020, while nearly 2,000 emerging music creators received their first ever music royalty because of a BBC play last year.
