Live Events

This page sets out our policy with regard to payment for live performances.  Please take time to read all of the information and related links carefully, and note that we do not require a set list for all live events.

In those cases where a set list is required, submitting full details of your members' live performances by email will help us to investigate your claims as efficiently as possible.

Policy - Overview

Royalty payment for a live performance depends on the type of venue where the performance took place.

  • Performances taking place in large-capacity venues, where the main business is ticketed concerts, are payable on an individual event basis. We do require a set list for these performances.
  • Performances taking place at smaller music venues, bars, pubs, clubs - or other venues unlikely to hold large, ticketed concerts - are paid on the basis of an independent survey commissioned by PRS for Music, whereby our team of music researchers collect details directly from performers at the selected events*. We do not therefore require set lists from you for these performances.

Please use our Premises Search to determine which category applies for a given venue.  To search for a venue, simply enter at least two of the five search criteria.

*Events are selected randomly, using software designed to produce a statistically valid sample.

Procedure - Performance Notification

  • If your search results show the premises type 'live music venue', please submit full set details via email, using the contact address at the end of this page; a royalty will be payable for this event.
  • If your search results show the premises type as 'theatre' or 'university', please submit full set details via email, using the contact address at the end of this page; a royalty may be payable for this event.
  • If your search results show any premises type other than 'live music venue', 'theatre', 'university', please note that we do not require a set list.

Where the submission of a set list is required, please check that the works performed are registered on our database.

If the relevant works do not appear on our database, please ensure that your email includes either a Fast-Track reference or fiche for each title.  Failure to do so may delay payment.

Payment - Royalty Distribution Schedule

  • For events where the steps above indicate that we do require a set list from you, we will endeavour to include a royalty in the first distribution following receipt of set lists from all of the acts appearing at the event and receipt of the event licence fee (charged to the promoter).
  • For events where the steps above indicate that we do not require a set list from you, payment - if due - will be made in accordance with the following distribution schedule:-

MCPS-PRS Distributions

Please note, the top row shows the month the performance took place. The second row shows the target distribution payment month.

For example - if the performance took place in May, then any due royalty will be paid the following October. If the event was not featured in our survey, however, it will not  generate a royalty in this or any subsequent distribution.

Gigs and Clubs Scheme

  • We supplement our survey of live music by operating a Gigs & Clubs Scheme whereby a writer whose works have been performed in 'non-concert' venues 10 times or more in a year may submit a core set list and be considered for an overall payment of approximately £50.
  • The scheme is electronically administered, and you can apply to make a claim by emailing gigsclubsscheme@prsformusic.com in the first instance; you will then be provided with an email template for submitting set list and event information.

Festivals

  • If your enquiry concerns a festival performance, please submit full details to the email address below, and we will be happy to investigate.

Contact

  • If you have any questions concerning live events which are not addressed here, feel free to contact us at internationalenquiry@prsformusic.com.
