• When music is approved directly by the owner/publisher
• Where a Production Music licence has already been obtained

What rights are covered in the licence?

This is a PRS only licence which covers the act of communicating music to the public.  This act is undertaken whenever you make music available online. Please view the summary of the key terms and conditions.

How to apply

To apply for a PRS for Music  Online Licence you must complete and sign a hard copy of the application form and return it to us by post, at: Online Licensing, 5th Floor BMH, 29-33 Berners Street, London, W1T 3AB

How much does the licence cost?

The PRS for Music Online Licence is charged in £53 (+VAT) blocks. For each £53 block you are granted a certain amount of streams/downloads for your site. The greater the usage, the more £53 blocks you need.

The tables below shows the usage limits per £53 (+VAT) Unit. The minimum fee is £53 (+ VAT). Fees will not be pro-rated for services that operate for less than a year.

Music Services

(For audio only services or audio-visual services where music is the primary focus of the content)

   Allowed uses per £53 (+VAT)
On demand streams Up to 45,000 streams
Background to a website (akin to webcasting) Up to 120,000 streams
Permanent downloads Up to 5,000 downloads

General Entertainment Services

(For audio-visual services where music is not the main focus of content)

   Allowed uses per £53 (+VAT)
On demand streams Up to 3,200 music hours streamed
Background to a website (akin to webcasting) Up to 8,500 music hours streamed
Permanent downloads Up to 350 music hours downloaded

Music hours are calculated by multiplying the viewer hours (i.e. the amount of time in total that users spend watching the content) by the percentage of music in the content.

For example, a streamed video featuring 3 minutes of music streamed 20,000 times equates to 60,000 music minutes or 1,000 music hours. This is therefore within the limit allowed under the £53 minimum.
