Benefits of Membership

I write or compose songs and/or music 

Do you write your own songs or music, or co-write with others? Is your music being performed? If so, join PRS for Music and you could start earning money from your work. You don’t need to be signed to a record label or music publisher to join us.

Reasons you should join

PRS for Music is the home of PRS and MCPS. We represent the rights of over 118,000 songwriter, composer and music publisher members, and help ensure they are rewarded when their music is played or performed.

You can become a member of PRS or MCPS, or both.

When to join PRS

You should join PRS if the music you have written is:

  • Broadcast on TV and/or radio
  • Used online
  • Performed live
  • Otherwise played in public

When to join MCPS

When to join MCPS

You should join MCPS if the music you have written is:

  • Released by a record label
  • Used online
Join MCPS

When not to join PRS or MCPS

You don’t need to join if you:

  • Perform in a band but do not have any writing credits
  • Arrange existing pieces of music which are still in copyright
  • DJ but don’t produce your own tracks
  • Represent a record label

You don’t need to join MCPS if you’re a published songwriter or composer and your publisher is already a member. In this case, your publisher will collect MCPS royalties on your behalf and pass them on to you. Please check this with your publisher.

Under Article 4 of PRS' Articles of Association PRS' members comprise: Writers, publishers and proprietors of copyright musical works.

Where a member is deceased, this term also refers to any successor including; any spouse, child, next of kin, beneficiary, personal representative, trustee, publisher or proprietor (PRS refers to such persons as 'successors' or 'successor members').

In order to qualify for membership, applicants must be able to prove:

  • their eligibility as a writer, publisher, proprietor, or successor
  • their identity
  • their right to assign the performing right to PRS
  • their right to the performing right income from PRS
