Jarvis Cocker, the legendary former frontman of Pulp, has been awarded a doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University.
On receiving his awarad, the singer said: ‘It's a great honour to be given this, especially in my home town.’ He told the audience ‘I'm called a doctor now. Don't worry, I won't open a surgery.’ And quipped: ‘But I guess if you are a songwriter maybe I could have some kind of musical surgery.
‘If you had a song with a swollen chorus, or a varicose verse, or if you need a little bit of help I could try and heal your song for you.’
Pulp got their break while Jarvis was at Sheffield Polytechnic (now Sheffield Hallam Uni) in 1981 when they were invited by John Peel to record a session for Radio 1.
Since his days with Pulp, Jarvis has found success as a solo artist, radio producer, filmmaker and artist.
