Elbow scoop Mercury music prize

Elbow have been awarded the 2008 Mercury music prize at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel on 9 September 2008 for The Seldom Seen Kid.

The Bury band were surprise winners of the £20,000 prize, holding off competition from the heavily fancied dub-step act Burial, who William Hill had at 4/7 to scoop the award.

The ceremony featured performances from a number of nominated acts including Radiohead, the Last Shadow Puppets and British Sea Power.
