Coldplay earn first ever UK number one single

Coldplay have completed a single and album chart double as their latest single Viva La Vida has topped the UK singles charts. Their fourth album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, remains at number one in the album chart for a second consecutive week.

The feat marks the band's first ever UK number one single having seen two of their previous hits - Speed of Sound and In My Place - reach the number two position.

The band have also been enjoying success overseas, claiming the number one album spot in Belgium, the US, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands and Australia among other countries.
