Autumn Awards

MCPS and PRS members picked up prestigious awards at last Autumn's music ceremonies

Yusuf Islam aka Cat Stevens won the ASCAP/PRS songwriter of the year award for his work on the album An Other Cup, which marked his return to songwriting and recording after almost 30 years.

Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead collected the BBC Radio 3 Listeners Award at the PRS-sponsored British Composer Awards, produced by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters, and received £10,000 towards a new orchestral work commission from the PRS Foundation. Winners included Judith Bingham for her choral work My Heart Strangely Warm'd and Chris Long who won the Making Music Award for O Lord, Remember.

Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie and Johnny McElhone of Texas were amongst those receiving Gold Badge Awards at the MCPS sponsored event. Uniquely, this ceremony also pays tribute to 'behind the scenes' entertainment professionals. Comedian Phil Jupitus of Never Mind the Buzzcocks and the BBC 6 Music Breakfast Show, was shocked but honoured to receive his badge ‘just for playing music.’

A host of members received Q magazine awards including the Arctic Monkeys (four nominations, and winners of Best Album and The People's Choice awards) and Oasis, who won Best Act in the World Today. Peter Gabriel was presented with a Lifetime Achievement award and U2 picked up prizes for Innovation in Sound and the Q Award of Awards.

At the fifth annual Digital Music Awards, Lily Allen picked up Best Pop Artist, and Muse awarded Best Rock Artist (their fansite was named best unofficial music site).
