Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy has praised the Arctic Monkeys, comparing the indie rockers from Sheffield to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.
Speaking to the Press Association, Duffy said: ‘Leonard Cohen's songs are poems, I saw him twice when he was touring here last year, Bob Dylan writes poems and the Arctic Monkeys write poems,’ adding ‘They (the Arctic Monkeys) are great lyric writers.’
Duffy will be hosting a Poetry Live for Haiti, a literary version of Live Aid, for those affected by the recent earthquake. Poetry Live takes place at the Central Hall in London's Westminster at 2.30pm GMT on Saturday 30 January and features poets including Andrew Motion, Roger McGough, John Agard, Dannie Abse, Gillian Clarke and Christopher Reid.
Tickets cost £10 with all proceeds going towards the Disasters Emergency Committee's Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
The Arctic Monkeys have also got involved in helping Haiti, donating the Stratocaster played by frontman Alex Turner in the band's first video to an online auction organised by Oxfam and Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis.
