SABEM wins copyright case
Belgian’s Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers, SABAM, have won an important legal ruling against TISCALI to force the internet service provider to filter tracks on illegal file-sharing sites.
The ruling means that TISCALI which has now become SCARLET has to adapt new technical procedures to ensure that SABAM’s musical repertoire cannot be illegally downloaded through P2P software.
According to SABAM the P2P software was being used to download massive amounts of copyrighted works without the permission of the authors, composers and publishers and they were not being remunerated.
This sentence could set a precedent for other cases related to copyright infringement.
