Gilles Peterson to receive The PRS for Music Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music Radio

BBC Radio 6 Music presenter, Gilles Peterson will receive The PRS for Music Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music Radio.

Radio Festival 2014, organised by The Radio Academy, opens next week on Monday 13 October with its biggest line up to date including rock star Iggy Pop, Australian Radio DJ Mel Greig and many more. Radio Festival 2014 is the UK’s premiere forum for discussion and debate in the radio industry and takes place from Monday 13 October to Wednesday 15 October at MediaCityUK, Salford. Ahead of the three-day event, The Radio Academy today announced the recipients of the final awards to be presented during the Michael Ball: PPL Wrecking Ball Cabaret evening on Tuesday 14th October. 

BBC Radio 6 Music presenter, Gilles Peterson will receive The PRS for Music Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music Radio. Gilles has been on radio in the UK and internationally for over 30 years. Through that and a career as a globally known DJ he has continuously championed emerging and classic artists across many genres.

Andy Harrower, Head of Broadcast, PRS for Music said: "PRS for Music members have gone on to achieve great worldwide success after being broadcast on Gilles Peterson’s many radio shows. His pioneering spirit and enthusiasm for promoting grassroots music alongside more established acts is something that is core to our ethos at PRS for Music. It’s a privilege to have such a champion in our midst."

The Radio Academy Local & Regional Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Midlands broadcaster, Jo Russell.  Jo, who currently co-presents the drivetime show on Birmingham’s Free Radio, after decades of award-winning, market-leading commercial radio breakfast shows, is a worthy recipient at the top of her game and renowned for her engaging style, great ideas and unstinting commitment.

This year’s Radio Festival is jam-packed with sessions from an eclectic mix of some of the greatest names in the industry including BBC Radio 4’s John Humphrys, Controller of Radio 1 and 1Xtra Ben Cooper, LBC’s Nick Ferrari, Bauer Media’s Dee Ford, Absolute Radio’s Geoff Lloyd, Kerrang! Radio’s Kate Lawler and many more. Iggy Pop will deliver the BBC Music John Peel Lecture with 7digital on Monday 13th October, addressing the topic of free music in a capitalist society. Australian Radio DJ, Mel Greig will also be a guest speaker, giving a cautionary note to the radio industry about prank calls and what can be done to try and protect all involved.  The event is an absolute must for everyone in the industry.
