The results are based on data compiled by PRS for Music, in order to pay accurate royalties to its 80,000 songwriting and composing members whenever their music is broadcast or publicly performed. PRS for Music identified the most played songs on international radio in 2010 that were written by British songwriters.
Fraser T Smith, co-writer of the hit song ‘Break Your Heart’ said: “It’s an incredible feeling – quite surreal, to realise that what Taio and I created in a small studio in Fulham, can be enjoyed by people all over the world. It’s what keeps me writing day in, day out.”
Commenting on the results, Karen Buse, director of international at PRS for Music, said: “This research goes to show the continued strength of British songwriting on the international stage. The music our songwriter members create is played and performed in every country around the world and I’m delighted that such fantastic UK talent can earn from their work overseas.”
PRS for Music has 150 agreements in place in 90 countries around the world, ensuring that whenever its member’s music is used, royalties are collected and paid; in 2010 £169.8m was collected internationally from UK music used.
